This carved ideogram contains some of the richest and best-known traditions of Chinese graphic art: the art of the seal, calligraphy, folkloric paper decoupage and so on. Hanging on the wall, hanging from the ceiling or placed against the glass against the light, this simple decorative object wants to bring you an aura of exotic poetry, benevolence and a positive wish.
The ideogram 樂 [lè] means both “happiness” and “music“. In Chinese mythology, not surprisingly, these elements are associated. It is said that once Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, was challenged in a fight by his opponent Chiyou. Paying attention to a dream, the Yellow Emperor used drums, made of cowhide and his iron and bronze artillery to conquer the enemy. It was not only the soldiers of Chiyou who passed out by the dozens and died, but the Emperor’s army was also close to collapse. In the end, Huangdi’s music teacher used a special bow to produce harmonious music, which reached the emperor’s warriors, who received renewed joy and strength to continue living.
