NATURE TEACHES US THE ESSENTIAL
THE 2022 HARVEST HAS BEGUN!
Passing through the vineyard - some reflections from the field
The fog that covers the vineyards every morning, the bunches of grapes hanging on the vines, the olives that have to ripen a few more weeks… This is the scenario in which we find Loppiano at the beginning of autumn. We enter among the columns of the vineyards and try to tell the experience of a grape harvester…
The word “grape harvest” (it. Vendemmia) comes from “vinum demere”, take away the wine! And, certainly, nature itself teaches that in order to bear fruit (or give life) one must take away (togliere) and cut (tagliare). Scissors in hand! In search of the bunches hidden in the middle of the leaves of the vines that until now served as protection! The leaves are no longer needed. They can be removed. For easier access to the fruit. And, like every year, only the vine and the fruit remain. The shoots are cut to be reborn again in a few months. And to bear fruit again. The branches do not rebel, this cycle is part of the essentiality of nature.
In some parts the clusters are abundant, in other parts they are less. For a whole year the same care is dedicated to the whole vineyard, but the results are not the same… It depends on the sun exposure of the vines, access to water, resistance to winds and bad weather. And, certainly, the commitment we put into our daily affairs is important, but it is also important to remain calm when the final results do not correspond to our expectations.
If the grapes were not crushed, there would be no wine… Those who taste wine, enjoy everything that has been squeezed from a fruit that until recently amazed with its abundance, being hung on the branches.
The essential of nature? It does not stop sowing, reaping and sharing.
