In the last two years, one of our greatest allies against Covid-19 is the mask, the correct use of which helps us on a daily basis in limiting the spread of the virus. With the spread of the Omicron variant, more transmissible than the previous ones, the use of masks, especially FFP2, has intensified and in certain circumstances it has become mandatory, even outdoors.
Why use the FFP2 mask?
The FFP2 mask is a reliable and effective protection device because it has a filtering capacity of more than 94% and therefore provides respiratory protection against aerosols suspended in the air. In fact, the abbreviation “FFP” comes from the English “Filtering Facepiece”, meaning “filtering facials”. This filtering power is obtained thanks to the superimposition of various protective layers that make up the mask and to the special processes adopted during the production phase.
When worn correctly, that is, covering the mouth and nose, the FFP2 only passes 8% of the air from one side to the other. Hence, it provides protection to both the wearer and those close to him/her. In case two people wear it, the risk of contamination is only 0.1%. To ensure this effectiveness, it is advisable to use an FFP2 mask for a maximum of 8 consecutive hours.
Why use the surgical template?
A surgical mask blocks at least 90% of the outgoing virus, but only 20% of the incoming virus. Therefore, it is a valid tool to protect others, especially if worn by everyone in the same environment. Made up of three layers of non-woven fabric, the surgical mask offers effective protection against the Covid virus for about four hours of continuous use.
Where to use surgical masks and FFP2?
With the decree of December 23, 2021, until the end of the state of emergency, that is, March 31, 2022, the use of the FFP2 mask is mandatory:
- on all public and long-distance means of transport;
- to access shows that take place indoors or outdoors;
- in theaters, concert halls, cinemas, entertainment venues and live music and other similar venues;
- in sporting events and competitions that take place indoors or outdoors;
- also, for those who have had close contact with a confirmed positive case at Covid under self-surveillance, up to the tenth day following the last exposure to the positive subject.
