Crucifixes Made in Loppiano

- Between heaven and earth -

A few days ago we published the article Between heaven and earth: the birds of Made in Loppiano in solidarity with Ukraine! We dedicated it to the Ukraine emergency aid initiative. Let’s take a step forward. Not only the birds “inhabit” the space between heaven and earth. Even a crucifix (or the Crucifix) does. An in-depth reflection, even if never exhaustive, on the meaning of the crucifix in our times seems important to us.

The inspiration of Crucifixes Made in Loppiano

Raised hands – key gesture for reading the crucifix that we would like to emphasize in this article:
  • Raised hands – surrender attitude. When we want to show the other that we are unarmed, we raise our hands. The crucifix is unarmed.
  • Raised hands – pleading attitude. When we are desperate for a solution in the midst of a complicated situation, we raise our hands. The crucifix is one desperate who begs for help.
  • Raised hands – gesture of donation. When we give something special, something precious to the other, we raise our hands. The crucifix is one who gives.
  • Hands up – attitude of praise. Not everyone allows it externally. But it does not change the fact that in moments of maximum gratitude for what is happening we come to turn to heaven with our hands raised celebrating the good of life. The crucifix gives glory. Even though it may seem absurd.
The raised hands gesture is also demanding. It is not easy to stay in such a position for a long time. For this, we need the help of close people. It would be impossible to find the meaning of the gesture of the raised hands without referring to some biblical story. Let us remember the passage from the Book of Exodus in which When Moses raised his arm, Israel was the strongest; but when he dropped it, the Amalekites won. (…) Then Aaron and Cur, one on the right and the other on the left, held his arms raised: in this way they remained raised (cf. Ex 17: 11-12). There is An Aaron and a Cur who in their attitude of humility, transparency and closeness help to keep their hands up. In a gesture of surrender. Supplication. Donation. Praise. The crucifix is not only one who helps, but also one who allows himself to be helped. Click here to discover all the Crucifixes Made in Loppiano
