Grafts at Fattoria Loppiano

For just over two weeks, Fattoria Loppiano has started the planting of the cuttings … but what is it about?

The first step to take when deciding to create a vineyard is to plant the rooted vine, a branch of the vine that has emitted its roots.

It is all based on the possibility of many plants to regenerate a member of which they have been deprived, in this case the root. The vine shoot is detached from the individual plant to which it previously belonged and placed back into the ground; the bud, specially treated, thus gives life to a new plant.

This mode guarantees a faster development of the sprout, while retaining all the characteristics of the mother plant from which it was detached.

As specified by vitebella, “the cuttings must be planted during the spring, when the sun-warmed earth is ready to welcome a new fertile life cycle”.

This is how the renewal process of our vines begins here in Loppiano. Fattoria Loppiano began the processing of the cuttings at the beginning of the month and the works are proceeding quickly.

It begins with the pruning of the roots, during which the unusable roots are removed and the healthy ones are shortened to facilitate the emission of new roots. The soil and the cuttings are then worked and the latter are planted. It is a process that requires a lot of care and precision to make sure you don’t go too deep.

The cuttings will stay in the ground, under continuous controls, until November.

We always go forward in perfecting our vines in order to obtain and offer you the best wines.
